Terrorist attacks on New York City last year are being felt in skyrocketing insurance premiums at home. The destruction and death caused by airline hijackers on Sept. 11 is hitting the budgets of everyone from homeowners to business operators, the Keystone Centre and city hall. The reason is that a flood of claims became a multibillion-dollar sting for "re-insurers," the companies that insure insurance companies, says Rod Ficek, who owns a Brandon agency. For homeowners, sharing their pain means increases ranging between 10-20 per cent, or $40- $80 this year. It’s worse if you own a business. Commercial policy premiums jump 25-75 per cent, depending on the type of business. Almost half, or $70,000, of the Keystone’s projected deficit this year is due to a 330 per cent jump in liability insurance rates.
