SIXTY YEARS AGO
Three western Manitoba men received military awards. They are Lt.-Col. Anthony J.B. Bailey of Shilo, Capt. Henry Carson Stevenson of Minnedosa and Squadron Quartermaster-Sergeant Douglas F. Eveleigh of Virden.
Residential streets constructed in Brandon in the future will be 48 feet wide, the city council decided last night. This is 20 feet wider than the streets in the older residential areas.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Arriving by rail at noon yesterday, the 20-odd members of the Manitoba legislature were fed at the new Brandon College dining hall, given a quick tour of the campus and then transported to the Winter Fair.
A history-making wage pact was signed by CNR employees yesterday. It will cover more than 18,000 express, freight and cartage workers across Canada and provides for a reclassification of jobs and a much wider seniority basis for employees.
Dale Falloon of Foxwarren won the T. Eaton trophy last night at the Winter Fair for the supreme champion bull. The bull is a Shorthorn, Westwarren Conquest, Shorthorn futurity champion.
FORTY YEARS AGO
The sale of champion beef and pork drew good prices yesterday, with the 673-pound carcass of the grand champion steer — raised by a last year calf scrambler Kim McConnell of Hamiota — selling to the Suburban Restaurant for $2.30 a pound.
The grand champion market hog also did a skyshooting job when the Grant Moffat animal from Forrest brought $2.50 a pound from Burns Foods of Brandon.
The first shipment of seeds to Mexico by A.E. McKenzie Ltd., of Brandon, for sale through a partially owned subsidiary in that country, was sent on its way yesterday by Industry and Commerce Minister Len Evans.
Ken Horn and his four-horse hitch from Virden copped the ribbon at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
British Foreign Secretary Lord Carrington resigned today, taking responsibility for his diplomatic failure to prevent Argentina’s seizure of the Falkland Islands.
The Canadian curling team of Bruce Kennedy, Bob Nicol, Rick Lang and Al Hackner hoisted their Silver Broom trophy high into the air after defeating Switzerland 9-7 in the final at the World Curling Championships.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
An agreement was signed today that guarantees RCMP services to the provinces for the next 20 years.
Judi Galellis of Edmonton rode Trust to win the CP Rail Grand Prix last night at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair in a six-horse jump-off.
Ernie Esaw of Elm Creek sold his two-year-old charolais for $5,000, the highest price brought in by any of the 120 bulls on sale at the Winter Fair last night.
TEN YEARS AGO
Shopping for a new home? Better pick quick. There is less selection and more home buyers in Westman so far this year. On March 31, there were 313 active residential listings in Westman — 16 per cent less choice than there was a year earlier.
Manitoba became the first province yesterday to require that new government buildings exceed national building codes for disabled access. The policy will also apply to the construction or renovation of public schools. The result will be better ramps, increased seating for people in wheelchairs and washroom sinks and light switches that are easier to reach.
