SIXTY YEARS AGO

Police today reported they had broken a plot to overthrow the Cuban government and assassinate the president, Gen. Fulgencia Batista.

A total of 98,057 immigrants reached Canada in the first six months of this year.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

The federal government’s willingness to give financial help to parents of babies deformed by the drug thalidomide was announced last night by Health Minister Jay Monteith in the wake of widespread demands for federal action. The tranquilizer thalidomide, developed in West Germany, was banned in Canada last March.

Six Manitoba army cadets have been named to the 20-man Western Canada cadet team, which will shoot in the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association matches at Ottawa next week. Area cadets include Cadet Captain Bruce Neild of Virden and Cadet Bombardier Glenn Dodd from the Agricultural School in Brandon.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Brandon is to be enlarged — between now and April 1 — by the addition of some 25 supervisory and technical employees of Manitoba Hydro, as Brandon becomes headquarters for Manitoba Hydro’s new western region.

The city assessment department will disband Jan. 1 next year as the provincial government takes over its duties under an agreement with the city.

City council last night approved an expenditure of $80,000 for a detailed plan for doubling the city’s water treatment plant capacity by 1974.

The federal government has refused to legalize even simple possession of marijuana and hashish but is taking steps to reduce legal penalties associated with possession, Health Minister John Munro said.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Israeli tanks and armoured troops steamrolled into West Beirut today, other units battled toward the Palestine Liberation Organization stronghold from the north and south, and artillery and gunboats hammered Yasser Arafat’s guerrilla enclave from all sides in furious barrages that continued after 15 hours.

Federal approval of a $6-million school on the Sandy Bay First Nation marks the end of a five-year struggle to get funds for the facility. The band, which in 1974 was the first in Canada to establish its own education program, has been badly in need of space for expanding programs.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Approximately 300 people from all over North America flocked to Coronation Park this weekend for the 22nd Street Westenders Reunion.

Silken Laumann won the Olympic women’s single sculls bronze medal today in Barcelona, just 2 1/2 months after a career-threatening leg injury. Gold medals were won for Canada in women’s pair rowing and women’s fours rowing.

TEN YEARS AGO

Warehouse One has been rescued by a local private investment company. The Winnipeg-based jean retailer and manufacturer announced yesterday that new financing had been found to secure the long-term future of the 107-store chain.

The Little River Rockfest kicked off last night in Minnedosa despite the cold wind, overcast skies and temperatures in the low teens. Rock fans were not deterred by the weather, though.

Brandon’s tiny Mexican community will grow by 10 today when Maple Leaf imports more employees from Mexico. They will fill new jobs on Maple Leaf’s expanding by-product line. Thirty-eight Mexicans already work at Maple Leaf, while seven have left since arriving in two waves earlier this year.
