In 1972: Direct distance dialing coming for Brandon

SIXTY YEARS AGO

Brandon College today received a cheque for $18,247.75 as its share of federal assistance to universities. About $383,000 was allocated to the province of Manitoba.

A private member’s bill to lift the ban on the colouring of margarine by Manitoba manufacturers yesterday was defeated 32-22 on second reading in the Manitoba legislature.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

A roaring fire that billowed huge clouds of smoke and raged through the marine division warehouse of the HI-Way Supermart on Pacific Avenue at 11th Street, gutted the entire brick building early today. Firefighters battled the blaze in temperatures lower than 20 F for more than five hours before getting it under control.

Mayor S.A. Magnacca told The Sun yesterday he felt there was still too great a divergence of opinion among the merchants of Brandon to warrant revoking the night hours bylaw.

The Manitoba Winter Fair Board sent a telegram to Cape Canaveral, Fla., last night inviting the U.S. astronaut Lt.-Col. John Glenn Jr., U.S. Marine Corps to visit Brandon on April 2 to officially open the 1962 fair.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Fort Rouge’s Orest Meleschuk and his rink of Dave Romano, Johnny Hanesiak and Pat Hailley won the provincial Consols in Virden and will represent Manitoba in the Brier.

U.S. President Richard Nixon visited the Great Wall of China today and called for an end to “walls of any kind between peoples,” then he met late in the afternoon with Premier Chou En-lai for their fourth session of talks.

Direct distance dialing will be introduced next month to telephone customers in the Brandon exchange. Metro Winnipeg has had this service since 1965, but Brandon will be the first community in western Manitoba to receive this long distance service.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Brandon School Division has been provided with a grant of $77,831 for its French immersion program.

Wayne Gretzky made professional hockey history by scoring his 77th, 78th and 79th goals of the season in a National Hockey League game against the Buffalo Sabres.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Liberal Leader Jean Chrétien wrapped up his party’s national convention last night with promises to win the next election and ensure Canadians have a say over final reform of the Constitution.

A coalition of Communist and nationalist forces mustered only a few thousand people — witnesses said 5,000, the interior ministry 10,000 — for a protest on the traditional Armed Forces Day to denounce the breakup of the Soviet Union and demand restoration of a united army.

TEN YEARS AGO

Monterey Estates, an active retirement community, has its grand opening today. Monterey Estates is a 50-plus adult community with an easy, affordable social lifestyle, located on Brandon’s North Hill.

Memories of one of the sport's all-time greats flooded the Keystone Centre today at the national women’s curling championship. It was Sandra Schmirler Day at the Scott Tournament of Hearts, as curlers and fans honoured the three-time world champion, who passed away in March 2000. The Wheat City will forever be linked to the career of Schmirler. It was in Brandon, at the 1993 Scott, where the Schmirler (Peterson) team first jumped to national prominence.
