In 2002: Province buys 10 new ambulances for rural areas

SIXTY YEARS AGO

Visitors from 22 states and four provinces reported at the new information booth at the International Peace Garden during the first three days it was opened.

Chick Longest, hard-hitting outfielder of the Carman Cardinals, is still holding down top spot in the Mandak League batting race.

The rust research laboratory in Winnipeg identified a stem rust attacking Prairie crops as Race 15B, a new fungus for which no resistant grain has been developed.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

The planet Venus beckons and the United States is ready to launch a Mariner 1 spacecraft in her direction to probe mysteries that have puzzled astronomers and scientists for centuries.

Approximately 150 people drawn from as far away as Troon, Scotland and Victoria, B.C., turned out to the recent 84th annual Brandon Hills Old-Timers’ picnic.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Partial triumph of the pedestrians over the automobile received official recognition this morning as Rosser Avenue was sealed to vehicular traffic between Sixth and 10th streets for two months. To the music of the Rivers and District Pipe Band, Mayor Bill Wilton released a set of balloons into the air as people sat on the sidewalks and on park benches surrounding trees and flower pots.

Sandra Philip, a student at Assiniboine Community College, has won a contest sponsored by the Brandon and District United Appeal for the design of a poster to be used in this year’s campaign. Second prize winner was Terry Gileckie and third prize went to Barry Stone.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

The Manitoba government stepped in yesterday to reopen Assiniboia Downs horse racing track, closed last week because of financial problems.

At least nine soldiers were reported killed and 47 people injured today in two Irish terrorist bombings directed at British military targets in London.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The 21st annual Canadian Turtle Derby had a surprise entry this year. Louie the Lobster, a three-and-a-half-year-old crustacean, is likely the first of his species to enter the Derby. The lobster came from the Prairie Lobster Farm in Portage la Prairie.

Boissevain’s Kerrie-Lynn Lamb and fellow Canadian Special Olympians Tony Moores, Johanne Rochon and John Wass took turns yesterday in Alicante, Spain, carrying the Olympic flame during torch relays that concludes prior to the opening of the Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona July 26.

TEN YEARS AGO

Chad Whittingham made his parents and the whole country proud at the American Quarterhorse Youth World Cup. Whittingham, one of seven members of Team Canada, won gold and silver medals for the western pleasure event and placed in the top 10 for both the trail and cutting events during the week-long World Cup held in Amarillo, Tex.

If you need an ambulance in western Manitoba, odds are improving that your ride will be in a roomy new model. The province has purchased 10 new ambulances for rural Manitoba, many of which have already been delivered, with 10 more on the way in the fall. Two new vehicles will be based in Souris and Minnedosa. The units are part of a $7-million plan to replace 70 aging ambulances.
