SIXTY YEARS AGO
The Kinsmen club announced that a reward of $50 will be paid for information leading to the conviction of the person who mutilated one of the deer in the Kinsmen Zoological Garden, pulling off approximately eight inches of its tail.
Wyton Brothers, who farm about 14 miles southeast of Brandon, brought in a sample of spring rye that stands at six feet two inches.
The big, new superliner United States broke the crossing record for the Atlantic when it completed the run from New York to Bishop’s Rock off the coast of England in three days, 10 hours and 40 minutes. It broke the mark of the Queen Mary 14 years ago.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
P.A. McPhail, manager of the Provincial Exhibition, noted last night that the total attendance on the grounds amounted to some 100,000 persons this year, nearly a one-third increase over the 74,000 who attended the sun-baked 1961 show. Drawing a lot of people were the 36 horses and men of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musical Ride, who appeared before each of the six grandstand shows during the week.
An H-bomb type-device, in the mightiest blast yet fired in the United States, sent a shower of rocks and sand soaring spectacularly thousands of feet over the Nevada desert yesterday.
FORTY YEARS AGO
The Brandon Evangelical Pastors’ Association held its first Open Air Cathedral yesterday evening at the Brandon Shoppers Mall.
More than 41,000 people spent their Dominion Day weekend in Riding Mountain National Park this year. In June of 1971, 93,923 people visited the park, while this year attendance was boosted to 107,371 people.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Virden residents climaxed their centennial celebrations Sunday by sealing a time capsule filled with messages for future generations.
A garden tea, served on city hall grounds, is a daily event during Homecoming Week.
More than 2,000 homecomers packed the Keystone Centre Arena tonight for the first night of the Centennial Spectacular, a three-hour grandstand-style variety show. Featured artists include Wilf Carter, Al Cherny, the Rhythm Pals, Lucille Starr and Katherine McKinnon, along with a Brandon high school song and dance group, Charlie Farquarson, The Trampoline Guys, impressionist Fred Little, the Banjo Palace Band and The Dublin show.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
A gloomy mix of cool weather and hard times has created a summer of discontent across most of the country.
A bulldozer pushed down the building that was once the Bran-U Day Care at the corner of 21st Street and Lorne Avenue today. The building, along with the daycare office next door and another neighbouring building, are being demolished to make way for a new daycare complex.
TEN YEARS AGO
The province is reducing the number of school divisions in Manitoba to 37 from 54. In southwestern Manitoba, four new divisions will be created after Bill 14, the bill dealing with amalgamation, is passed. School divisions wanted the bill passed by July 1 but delays in the legislature have held up the bill’s passing. South West Horizon School Division merges Souris Valley and Antler River. Park West School Division will result from the merger of Pelly Trail and Birdtail River. Prairie Spirit and Mountain divisions will merge as Prairie Spirit School Division. Mountain View School Division will be formed by the merger of Dauphin-Ochre, Duck Mountain and Intermountain school divisions.
They are outstanding in their field and will now join the ranks of Manitoba’s Agricultural Hall of Fame. Albert Chapman of Brandon, Ida Cochrane of Hamiota and Archie Londry of Rapid City are among eight Manitobans who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame later this month.
