In 2002: City clears way for south end IGA, Staples

SIXTY YEARS AGO

Hailstones as large as tennis balls fell at Wellwood, 30 miles northeast of Brandon, causing crop damage of 25 to 100 per cent.

Four pupils — George E. Richards, Brandon; Daniel McPhail, Wawanesa; T. C. Young, Jasper, Alta.; and Harvey Richards, Brandon — who attended the first class held at Clinton school in 1882 were present to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the school held this afternoon. Another early pupil, Mrs. A.B. Downing of Brandon, was on hand to cut the anniversary cake. The school was located about eight miles northeast of the city and is believed to be one of the first schools of the district.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Guy Laliberte’s Prince Edward Hotel float was named tops in the Local Commercial division of the Travelers Day parade.

The Brandon Chamber of Commerce moves into its new location today on the second floor of the Bank of Montreal building at Rosser Avenue and 10th Street.

The appointment of Air Commodore Robert A. Cameron, 51, of Oak Lake, as military adviser to the Canadian NATO delegation in Paris was announced by the Defence Department.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Ald. James McFarlane Mitchell, a former investigator with the CPR before operating Mitchell Sporting Goods for the past 26 years and having served on council for the last 11 years, has died at the age of 62.

City council agreed unanimously last night to give the go-ahead to a proposal to develop a trailer court at 18th Street North and Braecrest Drive.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Thousands of people attended the Brandon schools’ homecoming and reunion held at New Era school. A plaque was unveiled to commemorate the reunion,

Griswold Centennial celebrations get under way today with highland dancing, an auction of the community’s centennial book “Bridging the Years II” and fireworks.

CP Rail officials presented Mayor Ken Burgess with a 100-year-old piece of rail this morning in honour of Brandon and CP Rail’s centennials. The presentation also marked the official opening of CP’s Community Centennial Train, a three-car exhibit of photographs and vintage railway equipment.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

A strong aftershock from last month’s twin earthquakes jolted southern California again. The quake measured 5.4 on the Richter scale and centred near Big Bear Lake, 140 kilometres east of Los Angeles.

The U.S. space shuttle Columbia, with seven astronauts aboard, swept through a clear Florida sky and landed at Kennedy Space Centre today after being away for two weeks on NASA’s longest shuttle flight.

TEN YEARS AGO

Canada pledged $53 million in additional AIDS funding yesterday, the same day it was sharply criticized for its “miserly” contribution to an international fund meant to help some of the world’s poorest people gain access to treatments for the pandemic.

Local shoppers are one step closer today to seeing two more big retailers set up shop in the Wheat City. City council last night unanimously approved a conditional use application from Canadian Tire Corporation Ltd. to allow a Staples and an IGA to be built in Brandon’s south end. Canadian Tire and the site developer, Shindico Realty, will now begin construction of the two stores in August.
