SIXTY YEARS AGO

Newer methods of harvesting forage crops were demonstrated at a field day at Alexander. More than 200 district farmers were present.

Keith Hurst captured the Berill-Donovan trophy as winner of the spot landing contest sponsored by the Brandon Flying Club.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Appointment of L. Clevett, CPR baggagemaster and Thomas A. Black, CNR carman, as directors of the Brandon Community Chest was confirmed today.

Manitoba Lt.-Gov. Errick Willis took scissors in hand today to cut the tape and officially open the new treatment block of the Brandon General Hospital before a gathering of about 300 spectators and life members.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Effective July 3, there will be city bus service to Curran Park on a three-times-a-day, four-times-a-week basis.

The George Matthews Great London Circus performed for some 15,000 people this afternoon and evening, as the first big top circus in Brandon in more than 20 years drew overwhelming support.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

The Canadian dollar took a hammering on foreign exchange markets again today, diving nearly two-fifths of a cent to 76.99 cents U.S. by mid-morning. At noon, it slipped to 76.92 cents.

Blair Murray won the lightweight division of the wrist wrestling contest at the Summer Saloon at the Provincial Exhibition. He then challenged and beat middleweight champ E.C. Edmonds. But when it came time to try the wrist of heavyweight winner Lyle Wenger, Blair had met his match. Doreen Vermette won the ladies division.

Church bells pealed, cannons roared and Union Jacks fluttered everywhere as Britain rejoiced today over the birth of a baby destined to be king. Princess Diana gave birth today to a blue-eyed boy at 9:03 p.m.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The Bosnian presidency declared a state of war yesterday and the head of the UN force in Sarajevo demanded a 48-hour ceasefire before resuming efforts to reopen the city’s airport for humanitarian flights.

Southwestern Manitoba has netted more than $25 million in federal government purchases of goods and services in the last four years, government documents show.

TEN YEARS AGO

Already celebrating her Golden Jubilee, the Queen marked another milestone today when she became the fourth longest reigning monarch in 1,000 years of English history. Elizabeth II, who acceded to the British throne on Feb. 6, 1952, on the death of her father King George VI, overtook Edward III, who was proclaimed king on Jan. 25, 1327, and died on June 21, 1377, reigning for 50 years and 148 days. Taking into account leap years during her reign, the Queen has reigned for 50 years and 149 days.

The newly renovated life skills suite for special needs student was unveiled at Neelin High School yesterday. A ceremony capped months of construction work that began after the province announced funding of roughly $600,000 for the renovation. Malcolm Jolly, chairman of the Brandon School Division, said the project was first spoken of a decade ago. He called it the realization of a dream and congratulated the many people responsible for making it happen. More than 30 students will be using the facility in the next school year.
