A garage, owned and operated by John Eliuk, burned to the ground in Wawanesa this morning. Damage is estimated at $7,000 and the loss is only partly covered by insurance.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Seventeen Brandon College students won a total of $2,525 in scholarships for first-, second- and third-year work on the basis of examinations written in 1961-62. Topping third-year scholarship winners was Leonard F. Rivers of Decker.
The annual achievement day of the Belmont 4-H Beef Calf club was held with 17 participants. Grand champion calves in the market and heifer classes were shown by the brother-sister combination of Donna and Larry Chambers.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Despite rising prices and high unemployment, Canada this summer has become a $100-billion economy for the first time, federal statistics indicate.
A twin-engine airplane carrying Indian high school students to their northern Manitoba homes for a summer vacation crashed in the St. James district of Winnipeg, killing the pilot and all eight passengers.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
The Royal Bank of Canada became the first major chartered bank to announce an increase in consumer loans since last Thursday’s jump in the prime interest rate. Effective immediately, the Royal’s minimum rate for consumer loans will be lifted by one percentage point to 20.75 per cent from 19.75 per cent.
Provincial Exhibition organizers are thanking a new midway, Conklin Shows, and several new events for attendance figures topping 50,000 at the 1982 show — 17,000 more than 1981.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Chrissy Denboer, an 11-year-old Grade 5 student from Betty Gibson School, is taking her knowledge and the love of her country all the way to the Toronto Skydome. Denboer will be attending a Toronto Blue Jays game on Canada Day as a prize for winning an essay contest put on by the Toronto Sun.
The General Hospital is phasing out its Lifeline program for seniors. The emergency responder system has been operated out of the hospital’s emergency department since 1987. It is being replaced by a new Apello system offered by the Seniors for Seniors Co-op.
TEN YEARS AGO
Brandon parks will be spruced up and a long-derelict corner of the city will be examined for potential development as part of Neighbourhoods Alive initiatives announced yesterday. The provincial government is contributing $141,500 to four projects, among them a $25,000 environmental assessment of a large chunk of land at First Street and Pacific Avenue. Mike Abbey of the Brandon Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation says possible uses for the contaminated site include recreation, residences and commercial development.
Mayor Reg Atkinson is lining up against a recommendation by the city’s economic development officer that council start urban reserve negotiations with Sioux Valley. Sioux Valley needs municipal support for a casino by Sept. 1 or it will lose the chance to open a casino in Manitoba.
