In 1972: Bobby Hull signs with WHA’s Winnipeg Jets

SIXTY YEARS AGO

Hundreds of Brandon citizens gathered in the Exhibition grounds yesterday to see the transformation which the Brandon Kinsmen Club has made in the area now being developed as the Kinsmen Zoological Gardens. The occasion was the official opening of the garden, which was conducted by Mayor James A. Creighton in a brief ceremony before the main entrance to the garden, now graced with a new brick gate.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Safeway prices: Campbell’s tomato soup, eight tins for $1; hot house tomatoes, five-pound basket, $1.89; standing rib roasts, 79 cents/pound; fresh broiler turkeys, 49 cent/pound; Airway instant coffee, 12 oz. jar, 99 cents; chuck steaks, 55 cents/pound.

Nina Kozakiewicz, 16, a Grade 12 student at Vincent Massey High School, last night was presented with a set of luggage by Brandon Rotarian Don Earles. Kozakiewicz was selected from applicants from 76 Rotary Clubs in Western Canada to spend two months in Malaya during which she will speak to Rotary Clubs, explaining Canada and its way of life.

FORTY YEARS AGO

U.S. planes hit North Vietnam’s biggest hospital causing serious damage. They also bombed or dropped rockets on populated suburbs. President Richard Nixon announced plans for a two-month withdrawal of 10,000 United States troops from South Vietnam and directed that only drafted men who volunteer be sent there in the future.

Bobby Hull, the leading active scorer in the National Hockey League, signed the first half of a contract today that will give him $2.5 million to serve as player and coach for the Winnipeg Jets of the World Hockey Association.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

The space shuttle Columbia soared into the skies today on a mission inaugurating manned U.S. military operating in space and ending the federal space agency’s 21-year all-civilian rule.

Mother Teresa, 72, accepted the St. Boniface Hospital research foundation’s International Award before a cheering crowd of 20,000 at Winnipeg Stadium today. Mother Teresa accepted the citation and $20,000 on behalf of God and the world’s poor.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

A feature-length movie entitled “For the Moment,” the brain-child of writer/director Aaron Kim Johnson, is scheduled to be filmed almost entirely in and near the city of Brandon starting Aug. 10. The on-location shoot, which will take about seven weeks to complete, is expected to pump between half a million and $800,000 into the local economy.

Forty-two students graduated from the Brandon General Hospital School of Nursing this weekend. Five of those were male nurses.

TEN YEARS AGO

A decision by Forman Motors not to rebuild after a winter fire is the latest blow to a community that has lost a string of businesses over the last few years. The permanent loss of the car dealership will have a devastating impact on Rivers, predicts town administrator Dennis Higginson. Fire wiped out the dealership Feb. 2. Investigators determined it was likely caused by a short in an electrical panel.

South End Community Centre will get new playground equipment this year. The city has decided to spend $20,000 on a new playground structure.

An addition of 35 condominiums at 2040 Ottawa Ave. can proceed after city council rezoned part of the land for multiple family homes. The new condos, to be built by Wind in the Willows 1 Ltd., will be along Ottawa, between 22nd and 20th streets west of Shoppers Mall.
