Stores, schools and offices will close on Monday in observance of the birthday of Queen Elizabeth.
Jersey Joe Walcott retained his heavyweight title with a decision over Ezzard Charles.
Brandon Greys announced that Peewee Jenkins, former hurler of the Winnipeg Buffs, had been signed.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Gas pumps at North Star service stations registered a three-cent jump last night and a one-cent increase at British American Oil and Texaco stations in Brandon following national and Winnipeg price increases. Premium gas at North Star is now 46.9 cents a gallon and second grade gas went up to 41.9. British American Oil and Texaco both showed 45.9 cents and 39.9 cents.
Plans for a community recreation centre were unveiled at a meeting of the Brandon school board. The area is expected to be built on Vincent Massey High School property on McDiarmid Drive.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Currently playing in Brandon: Green Acres Drive-In has “Play Misty for Me,” starring Clint Eastwood, and “Sometimes a Great Notion,” starring Paul Newman and Henry Fonda; at The Strand is “The Anderson Tapes,” starring Sean Connery; Lucky Star Drive-In has “Carry On Again Doctor” and “Doctor In Love.”
Captain Dorothy Broomhall, who has been associated with the Girl Guide movement in East District, Brandon, for 32 years, received the first honorary life membership given in the Brandon division from Mrs. M. A. Jolly, division commissioner, at Curran Park.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Israel said its invading army captured a key Palestinian guerrilla artillery base at Beaufort Castle today and besieged other major guerrilla strongholds in southern Lebanon in a powerful thrust to within 40 kilometres of Beirut.
After an initial early morning slump, the beleaguered Canadian dollar held its own on foreign exchange markets today, slipping a mere 3-100th of a cent to 79.76 cents U.S.
Cuba has offered Argentina weapons to help in the Falkland Islands war with Britain.

The Royal Bank of Canada will donate $37,500 over three years to Brandon University to fund a course to teach preparatory English for aboriginal students.

TEN YEARS AGO
Accused cop killer Robert Marlo Sand faces charges of trying to escape custody following an incident yesterday when he was returning to jail from a court appearance. City police were investigating an incident at Brandon Correctional Centre that occurred after Sand, 23, appeared in court to set a preliminary hearing in the case involving the shooting death of Mountie Dennis Strongquill. Sgt. Rick Semler confirmed late yesterday afternoon that Brandon police are looking at charges of assault with a weapon, assaulting a peace officer and attempting to escape.
Springhill Farms and its union workers have signed a tentative agreement staving off a strike that threatened to close the hog slaughtering plant in Neepawa.
