FIFTY YEARS AGO
Four members of the Brandon Junior Chamber of Commerce, Art Meadows, Ted Norris, Howard Watson and Bud Sweaney, were honoured at the annual meeting when they were presented with Keymen Awards for outstanding service.
Competing in the Grades 5 and 6 track meet, Bill Thordarson, Dwight Kearns and Jim MacKenzie broke records in their respective age groups. Thordarson of George Fitton set a new 10-year-old high jump record of four feet, one-half inch; Kearns of Park hopped, stepped and jumped 29 feet, four inches to set an 11-year-old mark; McKenzie of Park went 31 feet, one inch in the hop, skip and jump for 12- year-olds.
FORTY YEARS AGO
The Manitoba Peace Council has protested the proposed military exercise by West German troops at Camp Shilo this summer.
Brandon’s school patrols, numbering more than 150, gathered at the Shrine Hall to be honoured at an awards dinner for their untiring service to duty throughout the last school year.
Gordie Howe, Jean Beliveau, Bernie (Boom Boom) Geoffrion, Harry (Hap) Holes, Wesson W. Adams Sr. and the late Regional (Holly) Smith were the latest members inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Perimeter Airlines will discontinue its flight service between Winnipeg and Brandon because the route is not profitable.
Twelve Brandon city bus drivers took on a dozen tests of skill on Sunday at the Bus Rodeo to win a chance to compete at the National finals in Saskatoon. This year, the privilege goes to Barry Good, a 13-year veteran.
Baseball great Satchel Paige died in Kansas City after a heart attack. He was 76.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
The largest random drug testing program in Canadian history, covering about 40,000 members of the Armed Forces annually, will begin later this year.
In a move that has been described as Orwellian, the Brandon School Board has agreed to mount a video camera on school buses to crack down on misbehaving students.
TEN YEARS AGO
Employees came to work yesterday at Springhill Farms in Neepawa expecting to strike and instead left with a two-year contract, stable wages and assurance of a $750 signing bonus. The hog plant’s 370 union workers voted 94 per cent in favour of ratifying a contract with the company. The contract was settled after Springhill had for weeks demanded deep pay cuts and threatened to shut down permanently if a strike occurred.
Skies above Brandon will be abuzz today as military personnel touch down in the city. Nine C-130 Hercules aircraft will begin arriving around noon today, carrying members of the Missouri National Guard on their way to Canadian Forces Base Shilo for training exercises. Canadian troops aboard as many Bell-412 helicopters will also be landing, making for one of the busiest days the Brandon airport has seen. All the activity means between 50,000 and 60,000 litres of fuel will be sold, or about $50,000 worth.
The Brandon Sun will become a smoke-free building July 1, clearing the air two months ahead of the city’s smoking legislation.
