“Is this a big deal for y’all?” It was the question Maj. Vicki Hiland asked after arriving at Brandon airport to a small crowd that turned out to watch C-130 Hercules aircraft touch down carrying Missouri Air Guard members. Hiland was aboard the first of nine aircrafts scheduled to arrive to deliver troops headed for Canadian Forces Base Shilo for training exercises. Dennis Heldenbrand, the group’s commanding officer, appeared surprised at the interest but said the Canadian welcome is appreciated. “This is the first time this entire brigade has ever travelled outside the United States since the Second World War, so it’s a real honour to be here, and the Canadians have just been great to us,” he said.

Forty-nine residents signed a petition against the location while 104 support it, including 42 residents of the area.
