SIXTY YEARS AGO
The three gold medals offered in the arts and science course at the University of Manitoba and affiliated colleges were all won this year by Marion Corinne Simmons of Brandon College.
The graduating class of Brandon College is the second largest in the history of the college. There will be 32 receiving diplomas.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
A dozen U.S. Air Force jet fighterbombers flew into Bangkok today as the spearhead of a new U.S. Southeast Asian command to help defend Thailand from any Communist thrust from Laos.
In order to put a stop to cattle rustling, the Manitoba Stock Growers Association is now going to offer a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any persons stealing, rustling or killing cattle belonging to farmers or ranchers in the province of Manitoba.
Doreen Saunders was elected president of the Kinette Club at the annual meeting. She succeeds Dawn Leckie.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Unemployment fell by 50,000 to 592,000 at mid-April, compared with 642,000 in March, Statistics Canada and the manpower department say.
Currently playing in Brandon at the Lucky Star Drive-In is “Love Story,” starring Ryan O’Neal and Ali MacGraw and “The Sterile Cuckoo,” starring Liza Minelli; at the Green Acres Drive-In is “Rio Lobo,” starring John Wayne and “Pocket Money,” starring Paul Newman and Lee Marvin; at the Strand is “The Ten Commandments” starring Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Bill Valender, Oak Lake’s oldest veteran at 90, raised the flag while his 91-year-old wife Edith lit an electric birthday cake this week to mark the community’s 100th birthday.
The CBC is moving its flagship TV news package The National and The Journal to 9 p.m. from the current 10 p.m. time slot as part of a series of radical changes to its TV and radio networks.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Winners at this year’s E-gré competition were: first place, Annalee Patipatanakoon, violinist; second place, Katherine Palyga, violinist and third place, Eldon Lepp, violinist.
The provincial government has announced it will construct a bridge over the Assiniboine River, which will make an eastern access route into Brandon’s industrial area possible.
TEN YEARS AGO
Steve Malkowich believes skateboarders may finally have an ideal spot to perform. They have abandoned plans for a skateboard park in Brandon’s North End and are setting sights on a new location east of Queen Elizabeth Park. “I think it’s an ideal location,” says Malkowich, Wheat City Skateboard Association chairman. Malkowich says association members have looked at the site over the weekend and agree it is preferable to a proposed home in the North End.
A local company has won the bid for paving and sewer work for 2002. Zenith Paving secured the low bid of $2.44 million for the project ahead of Nelson River Construction and Maple Leaf Construction.
