Citizens of Brandon and western Manitoba have subscribed $8,500 for crippled children through the Kinsmen Easter Seal campaign.
University of Manitoba and provincial education department officials said that Brandon College will offer university degrees in education. The move is intended to increase the supply of qualified teachers and the net cost is expected to be about $15,000 a year.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
The Duke of Edinburgh will be making a 45 minute refuelling stop at Brandon Airport May 27 on his tour of Western Canada, Mayor S.A. Magnacca announced.
Firmly opposing French President Charles de Gaulle’s drive for a separate French nuclear deterrent and the French idea of a third world political body, U.S. President John F. Kennedy says he would regret any move which would split the Atlantic alliance — with Europe on one side and the U.S. and Canada on the other.
Dr. Gerald J. Goldenberg, 28, a Brandon-born medical graduate of the University of Manitoba has been awarded a Canadian Hadassah Cancer Research Fellowship to finance a year’s training in cancer research at the Chester Beatty Research Institute in London, England.
FORTY YEARS AGO
The Manitoba cabinet has issued an order-in-council naming nine persons to Brandon Housing Authority. Joyce Murray, Donald Adams and John Stonehouse are provincial nominees. A. F. Pue, D. J. Pratt and Hugh Gibson are city nominees. Phyllis Ricou will represent the senior citizens and Ben Friesen and Gorton Jones will represent the tenants. Manitoba is the only province in Canada which has given representation to tenants on housing authorities.
A first for Brandon — a pro-am golf tournament — was announced today by Brandon Golf and Country Club manager George Jimas. The pro-am in conjunction with Peter Jackson’s Canadian Professional Golf Association tour will be staged at the BGCC July 18.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Manitoba drinkers will pay about 15 per cent more for a bottle of wine on May 30, eight per cent more for a case of beer and seven per cent more for a bottle of spirits. The cost of a 710 millilitre bottle of Seagram’s 5 Star rye whisky will rise to $11.60; a 750 millilitre bottle of Jordan Valley rose wine will increase to $3.95 and the price of a case of domestic beer will rise to $8.10.
Manitoba’s small schools are now eligible for $1.7 million in additional provincial funds, Education Minister Maureen Hemphill announced yesterday in Winnipeg.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Health officials have approved two nicotine patches for sale in Canada. The devices, worn on the outer arm or upper body, deliver a steady flow of nicotine into the blood system to help people to quit smoking gradually.
Members and friends of the Ghost Riders 4-H Club — a total of 48 horses and riders — made their way along the 34th Street bicycle path last night as part of the Canada 125 Ride for Unity.
TEN YEARS AGO
A road being built to the site of this month’s train derailment near Firdale should allow cleanup crews to haul away benzene-contaminated soil before the cancer-causing chemical soaks into underground water supplies, Manitoba Conservation officials say.
After steering the Brandon Regional Health Authority through five years of often tumultuous development, Earl Backman is retiring as chief executive officer. Backman has been the health authority’s lone CEO since its formation in 1997. Before that, he spent 14 years as Brandon city manager. Backman will officially retire Nov. 30.
