Manitoba will stand by its order of banning livestock shipments from Alberta and Saskatchewan.
An action-packed tag team match climaxed a big boxing and wrestling card staged at the Rivers Arena last night. Pete and Vern Plett, Manitoba’s heavyweight and light heavyweight champions respectively, combined forces in the tag team event to win two of three falls from Sgt. Dave Plett and Ron Mortimer.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Honours were given to four members of the Brandon city police force last night as the city recognized their years of service. Presented with the Canadian Association of Police Chiefs medals were Chief H.H. Collister, a veteran of 37 years as a policeman; Sgt. A.C. Goucher, 30 years; Det. Sgt. George Tyerman, 25 years and Const. A.W. Robb, 20 years.
Unemployed persons registered at the National Employment Office in Brandon decreased by 151 to 2,230 males and 532 female workers during the month of April.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Brandon was one of the areas in southwest Manitoba which experienced the first hail storm of the year yesterday. Hailstones ranged in size from a pea to about one inch in diameter. There was 1.19 inches of rain.
Hanoi said many U.S. aircraft attacked North Vietnam yesterday following a buildup of American naval power in the Tonkin gulf. In the south, Vietnam Ness Agency said U.S. planes deliberately raided many populated areas in Hanoi and the port of Haiphong to massacre the civilian population.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said today Argentina’s response to the latest Falkland Islands peace proposal doesn’t look very encouraging and British newspapers reported she has already decided to invade the islands.
Construction of part of North Dakota’s Garrison diversion project was temporarily banned yesterday by U.S. District Judge Donald Porter in Pierre, S.D., who must next decide whether to impose a long-term freeze on the massive irrigation project.
Princess Anne will include Brandon as part of a three-day stay in Manitoba on July 15.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
The Summer Fair will be the launching pad for a California company making its Canadian debut of bungee jumping.
The Brandon University board of governors has written the provincial government’s Universities Grants Commission for approval for two new four-year courses: a bachelor of science in environmental science and a bachelor of science in nursing.
TEN YEARS AGO
Two Brandon women have been honoured as being among the best and brightest of Manitoba’s business community. Barb Webber, owner of Shades Above Co. Ltd., was named Woman Entrepreneur of the Year in the home-based business category. Also honoured was Barb Bragg. The owner of The Learning Company won her award in the contribution to community category.
Brandon’s air cadets were part of something special when they hosted the prestigious Golden Falcon Competition at which they dedicated their 60-year-old banner and helped four other squadrons commemorate their banners. “It is an auspicious day for the provincial air cadet movement,” Air Cadet League of Canada director Ron Pruden said yesterday. The banners of Brandon 82, Winnipeg 170, Winnipeg 177, Winnipeg 191 and Winnipeg 220 air cadet squadrons are all 60 years old.
