Britain, United States and France signed a peace contract with West Germany.
Canada released yesterday an additional $41 million to the World Bank, to be loaned to member counties at the bank’s will. This made Canada the second-largest contributor to the international bank.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Bernard Wightman and Robert Fisher, both working for Plains Western Gas, were overcome by gas fumes and had to be rushed to the hospital.
About 125 Wawanesa people were present today at the official opening of the new post office at Wawanesa. Walter Dinsdale, minister of northern affairs and national resources, cut the ribbon.
Astronaut Malcolm Scott Carpenter was sighted floating in a life-raft outside his Mercury space capsule shortly after noon today, some 250 miles off course, after he completed three orbits of the Earth. Earlier in the day, a powerful Atlas missile had blasted off from the space port to send Carpenter skyward at 17,532 miles an hour in an orbital path ranging from 99 to 164 miles above the Earth.
FORTY YEARS AGO
A record-breaking 34,251 people crowded the Clear Lake resort area over the long weekend.
U.S. amphibious craft and helicopters landed nearly 2,000 South Vietnamese marines on an end run into Communist-held territory north of Hue today, and scores of American planes blasted North Vietnamese industrial plants in the Haiphong area in a new phase of the bombing campaign.
U.S. President Richard Nixon and Soviet leaders, continuing their summit talks, virtually reached an arms limitation accord that will embrace both a treaty and a less formal agreement.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
The nine-team Manitoba Senior Baseball League begins its 22nd season with two games this evening.
In fighting in the Falkland Islands today, Britain claimed it shot down eight more Argentine planes, but said it lost its third warship, the frigate Antelope, blown up by an Argentine bomb.
The British hoisted the Union Jack over the Falkland Islands after an assault on the Argentine-occupied colony that erupted in a fierce battle claiming casualties and heavy damage.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Two Brandon residents, Joe Wojnicz, 70, and Joe Blonski, 72, who both fought in the Polish army during the Second Word War, finally received commemorative medals from Polish President Lech Walesa for their part in the Monte Cassino battle in Italy in 1944.
The new president of the Marquis Project, a Brandon-based international development education and assistance organization, is Clint Cannon of MacGregor.
TEN YEARS AGO
Springhill Farms management says it will shut down the Neepawa pork plant permanently if there is a work stoppage. General manager Bill Teichroew gave 18 weeks’ notice of termination of employment to workers through their union yesterday. Springhill is seeking wage concessions from its workers to close the $2.50 an hour wage gap between the employees and those at Brandon’s Maple Leaf plant. The 411 Springhill workers, members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, voted 96 per cent in favour of a strike May 9, but no strike deadline has been set. The two sides are set to meet again May 31. The union is awaiting another offer from Springhill.
A local hockey shrine that attracted the likes of Gordie Howe and other NHL greats has been reduced to cinders. For more than 30 years, beginning in the late 1940s, Pestyk’s Hand Made Hockey Boots crafted custom-made skates for generations of pro and amateur hockey players. Late last night, Pestyk’s former home at 20th Street and Rosser Avenue was destroyed by fire.
