Revving up Brandon as an “urban engine” is one of the NDP government’s key economic goals, Premier Gary Doer says. At a Brandon Chamber of Commerce luncheon, Doer spoke of providing infrastructure necessary to invigorate the city. The most important piece of that infrastructure is education, he said, proudly listing growing enrolment figures for Brandon University and Assiniboine Community College.

What’s likely Brandon’s biggest private-sector construction project this year has received city council’s approval. Heritage Co-op plans to start building in August an $11.1-million grocery store, gas bar and car wash on Richmond Avenue between Broda Bay and 13th Street. It will create 150 jobs when it opens in spring.

Environmentally conscious Brandonites won’t need to lug tin cans, margarine tubs and newspapers to depots much longer. A local version of curbside recycling is coming to Brandon early next year.
