In 1962: Boy pulled from wheel of moving train

SIXTY YEARS AGO

The Wheat City Curling Club voted unanimously last night to award honorary life memberships to Tom Philips, W.W. Rathwell and John Rees. The presentations will be made in the fall.

The appointment of Jack McKenzie, former member of the Brandon Wheat Kings, as supervisor of minor league baseball in the city this summer was approved.

Brandon students made almost a clean sweep of awards in the Manitoba division of the poster contest sponsored by the Canadian Forestry Association. Winners were: first, Garry Patton, $25; second, Maida Bird, $15; third, David Taylor, $10. Keith McCallum and Joan Thompson received honourable mention.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Mayor S.A. Magnacca announced this morning that the mill rate had been struck at 60 mills. That’s a two-mill cut on the 1961 rate set last year, which appropriated $2,670,113 for the year’s spending.

Mayor S.A. Magnacca said last night the sum of one mill will be set aside in the 1962 budget for construction of a new city hall adjacent to the present building on the site of the old CKX station. The present building would be demolished when the new one is completed.

An unidentified Brandon boy came within an inch of his life when CPR conductor Albert Guichon pulled him from the wheel of a moving train.

FORTY YEARS AGO

The Suburban Restaurant, at 26th Street and Victoria Avenue, is now featuring nightly entertainment with Florence Boles, Larry Clark and Rodney Mykle.

Thirteen-year-old Michael Jackson, lead singer of the Jackson 5 brothers who have sold 17 million single records, is described by his recording company — Motown Records — as the first singing idol for black teenyboppers. He and his brothers in two years have become Motown Records’ hottest-selling group. They have had three two-million-selling albums.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

A federal appeals court has overturned a ruling that halted construction on the controversial Garrison diversion project in North Dakota.

Yesterday was Arbour Day and students helped with tree plantings on the grounds of Betty Gibson, Vincent Massey, Linden Lanes and Green Acres schools.

Canada’s recession may be on the brink of turning into a depression. Unemployment surged to 9.6 per cent of the workforce in April, up from nine per cent in March. Both rates were records unsurpassed since the Depression of the 1930s.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Brandon’s Scott Hendrickson, a 22-year-old offensive lineman will sign a two-year contract with the Saskatchewan Roughriders today. Hendrickson was the ’Riders second-round pick (15th overall) in the 1992 CFL college draft.

A jointly funded $1-million federal-provincial program to save trees on the Prairies and help farmers and other private landowners diversify their operations in southwestern Manitoba was announced in Brandon this week.

TEN YEARS AGO

Bert and Maxine Cyr consider themselves passionate campers rather than risk-takers. Now they’re putting savings into their hobby by buying Curran Park, a flood-prone campground that frustrated its first private owner after just one year. This year, Cyr estimates he will spend $100,000 tidying up camp sites, a mini golf course and building a new concession. He is also developing 50 new sites with electricity, water, sewage outlets, cable and phone hook-ups for next camping season.

There will soon be some changes within the Brandon School Division. Nancy Dane is moving into the principal’s post at New Era School after serving as principal of Alexander school. Greg Malazdrewicz has been appointed principal of Neelin High School. He has worked in the division 16 years, most recently as vice-principal at Vincent Massey High School. Kirkcaldy Heights School will be guided by principal Bruce Shamray. He is currently vice-principal at Vincent Massey. Darlene Wilkinson will serve as the new principal of Riverheights School. She has 12 years of vice-principal service with the division, at Kirkcaldy Heights and Meadows schools.
