The British government banned movement of all livestock throughout England and Wales, as foot-and-mouth disease spread in England to Jersey, Channel Island home of the famous pedigreed milk cows. The island has been declared a restricted area.
The team of Earle Finley, Doug Elliot, Ed Robinson, Bob Younger, Jimmy King and Bill Sakelos will compete in the American Bowling Congress at Milwaukee, Wis.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
The Golden Hawks of the RCAF, rated among the world’s top aerobatics teams, will be in Brandon again this year at the Provincial Exhibition on July 2.
A barn and granary located east of Elkhorn were destroyed by fire. The farm belonged to Ronald Greenshields.
Tom Derrick, 75, became the winner of the Men’s Health Club Swim-a-thon after clocking 2,200 lengths of the YMCA pool over a period of one month.
FORTY YEARS AGO
The biggest U.S. air and naval task force ever assembled in Vietnam mined the entrances to Haiphong and four other North Vietnamese ports today. The planes also struck rail lines and highways throughout North Vietnam.
U.S. congressmen are pressing the Nixon administration for clarification of its decision to blockade North Vietnamese ports, described by Democratic presidential contender George McGovern as “a flirtation with a Third World War.”
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Gilles Villeneuve, 32-year-old Canadian auto racing star, died on the weekend after a shocking 275-kilometre- an-hour crash in his Ferrari during a qualifying run for the Belgium Grand Prix.
The quantity and strength of sewage discharged into the Assiniboine River by the city has substantially increased in the past eight years studies show.
Members of the Brandon and District Restaurant Association want the sales tax on restaurant meals eliminated in the next provincial budget.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
The Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium will be getting a much needed facelift. By September, there will be new chairs, carpet and a new look to take the property out of the 1970s and into the ’90s for a cost of $800,000.
Another new business opened in Brandon this week. Priority Ag and Auto Parts is open for business at 2020 Currie Blvd.
TEN YEARS AGO
Snow that hit western Manitoba yesterday fell far short of the 30 cm that blanketed Calgary on Monday. But it did result in some long faces hoping for spring to finally arrive. The Weather Network website said close to two centimetres of snow would fall here overnight.
The Elks Lodge and Royal Canadian Legion fear a smoking ban will extinguish cash flow. Elks have told city council in a letter that the service club could lose thousands of dollars if the city bans smoking in bingo halls.
A long-awaited $650,000 flower garden and more events than ever are expected to bring crowds to the Assiniboine riverbank this summer. Eleanor Kidd Gardens will officially open on Canada Day after four years of fundraising, design and construction. It’s the last big-ticket capital project from the late 1990s, when all three levels of government poured grants into Brandon Riverbank Inc. The gardens include flower beds, shrubs, a fountain, sculpture and a performance stage covering an area about the size of a soccer field. City workers will plant bulbs and seed this spring, including a rose garden.
