Three deer were born at the Kinsmen Zoo over the weekend.
Light rain early today helped check the rapid deterioration of crops and pasture lands in the Brandon district.
Marian Joyce Leckie of Virden was awarded the governor-general’s medal for general proficiency and leadership at the Virden Collegiate graduation exercises.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
The McKinnon Creek Hill ski development in Riding Mountain National Park has been named the Agassiz Ski Hill, Resources Minister Walter Dinsdale announced today. Agassiz was suggested as the name for the ski hill by Mrs. H. Weare of St. Vital.
E.O. Stewart has been elected exalted ruler of Brandon Elks Lodge No. 14 in a reorganization of the lodge.
Safeway prices: minced beef, 39 cents per pound; chuck steaks, 49 cents per pound; Aylmer tomato or vegetable soup, eight 10 oz. tins for $1; California Valencia oranges, three dozen for $1.
FORTY YEARS AGO
North Vietnam forces attacked Kontum City, in the central highlands today, while U.S. planes bombed two power plants and a major bridge in the Hanoi-Haiphong industrial complex for the first time since the 1965-68 bombing campaign.
The Rolling River School Division board has appointed Arnold Nicholls to the position of superintendent of the division on the resignation of Keith Cooper, who has accepted a position as assistant superintendent for Winnipeg School Division No. 1.
The senate of Brandon University has approved in principle a proposal of a committee for a bachelor of general studies program.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Iraq said today its forces have pulled out of the city of Khorramshahr, captured from Iran 19 months ago at the start of the Persian Gulf war.
Attendance at Riding Mountain National Park during the May long weekend has been decreasing steadily over the past three years. About 22,477 visitors passed through the park gates this holiday weekend, down 3,173 from last year and about 5,000 in 1980.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Serb-led Yugoslav troops began evacuating their last bases in Bosnia- Herzegovina as moderate Serbs launched efforts to end an ethnic war that has displaced almost a million people.
Al Unser, Jr. became the Indy 500’s first second-generation winner in the closest race in the 76-year history of the event, winning by 43-1,000th of a second. His father Al Unser finished third.
TEN YEARS AGO
Timothy Genaile usually spends his weekday noon hours serving food at Helping Hands soup kitchen. Yesterday, tables were turned and he received royal treatment, getting his meal from Lt.-Gov. Peter Liba and his wife Shirley. Liba’s one-hour stop at Helping Hands Inc. was only one stop on a whirlwind tour of the city. Following lunch at the soup kitchen the Queen’s representative in Manitoba stopped off at Riverheights Terrace. Following that stop, Liba presented awards to the Brandon Police Service at a ceremony in City Hall. He later presided over the St. John Ambulance Annual Investiture and Awards Ceremony. He finishes up his visit to Brandon today when he speaks at the morning session of Brandon University’s spring convocation and attends an on-campus luncheon.
