important to keep eye out for pedestrians
School is still in session and with the warmer spring weather comes increased pedestrian traffic at peak times.
As motorists, we need to be constantly on the look out for people on foot.
Motorists need to be aware of other vehicles stopped at crosswalks or at an intersection, as they may be doing so to allow a pedestrian to cross.
Section 139 of the Manitoba Highway Traffic Act is quite clear on the responsibilities of motorists approaching from the rear and states:
“Where a vehicle is stopped at a crosswalk or at an intersection to permit a pedestrian to cross the highway (streets are considered highways), no driver approaching from the rear shall overtake and pass the stopped vehicle.”
So be careful, for safety sake, when approaching vehicles stopped at a crosswalk or intersection, as they may be allowing a pedestrian to cross, even one that you cannot see because that pedestrian may be a child.
Violating this law may mean a traffic ticket with fines totalling $140.75 and demerits against your licence. Drive with caution and show respect for others on the road.
