More and more people seem to be turning to bicycles as an alternate means of transportation around the city and beyond.
Biking can be an enjoyable pastime, as long as it is done safely.
The Brandon Police Service would like to remind cyclists that it is illegal to ride a bicycle on the sidewalk, if the rear wheel is more than 410 millimeters (16 inches) in diameter.
Riding on the sidewalk interferes with pedestrian traffic and has been a contributing factor in accidents with motor vehicles, when the cyclist entered the roadway without warning. Bicycles that are being ridden on the street are subject to the same basic rules of the road that govern motor vehicles.
If you do ride a bike on the sidewalk that has a rear wheel larger than 16 inches, you are risking a fine of $111.10 under Section 145(8) of the Highway Traffic Act.
To report road hazards or inquire about traffic matters, contact the Brandon Police Service traffic unit at 729-2345.
