4-H clubs set to clean up highways in Westman

Members of 4-H clubs across the province will attack highways on May 26 in an effort to clean up roadways in the area.

The 26th Annual 4-H Highway Clean-Up Campaign, which is sponsored by Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation (MIT), Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives and the 4-H Manitoba Council, teaches 4-H members, aged eight to 21, the value of environmental consciousness and recycling.

This year, 44 clubs will take part in the clean up working toward a cleaner environment while at the same time giving back to the communities that support them.

Last year, 40 clubs were able to take part in the clean up, picking up refuse along almost 500 kilometres of highway in Manitoba. Their efforts filled more than 2,000 garbage bags and raised more than $13,000 for 4-H clubs in Manitoba.

The program is primarily funded by MIT, paying 20$/km of roadside cleaned, with an additional $5/km if the clubs take the refuse to a local landfill site and another 5$/km if cleaning is within a three kilometre radius of a community with a population greater than 1,000.

The youth of 4-H take a great deal of pride in the clean up, understanding the impact it has on the environment.

Safety is always the number one priority as 4-H members will be wearing safety vest while involved in the project. Motorists are advised to slow down and pass workers with caution, and are encouraged to honk their horn as a "salute of success."
