About 1 in every 8 vehicles stopped at RCMP Christmas checkstop gets ticketed

About one in every 180 vehicles stopped during the RCMP’s Christmas Checkstop Program contained a drunk driver behind the wheel, according to police, and about one in every eight vehicles is ticketed in some form.

Officers stopped 4,380 vehicles from Dec. 10 to 16 and charged 24 people with impaired driving. The average blood-alcohol reading was .17 mgs, more than double the legal limit of .08 mgs. The highest reading was .34 mgs, more than four times the legal limit, found in a man that crashed his snowmobile in Lynn Lake.

Police also handed out 10 24-hour alcohol related suspensions, 24 people were charged for not wearing their seatbelt, and 471 other traffic related offenses were ticketed.

The program also turned up five drug seizures, including the seizure of 40 grams of marijuana at a checkstop in Lac du Bonnet.

There were two-traffic related fatalities in the province during the week, neither involving alcohol. Last year, there was one traffic related fatality during the second week of the program that stopped more than 5700 vehicles and issued 41 impaired charges.
