Brandon Sun - ONLINE EDITION

After the snow, the deep freeze

A Brandon shovels out from a few centimetres of snow that fell yesterday and overnight — total accumulations were about 5 cm — a cold front is moving in.

And it's here to stay for a while.

Evironment Canada is calling for temperatures to be steady today around -18ºC, with light snow today and a northwest wind at 30 km/h.

Flurries could continue tonight and into early tomorrow morning, with an overnight low of -22ºC, although the wind should die down a bit.

Temperatures will stay steady around -20ºC tomorrow, with cloudy skies, and even a slight breeze taking the wind chill to a possible -32.

The weekend will see sun, but not much warmth in it. The Saturday high will be -24ºC, followed by a high of -22ºC on Sunday.

Sunny skies will continue into next week, as will the cold temperatures, which are well below normal for this time of year.

Monday through Wednesday are forecast to be sunny and clear, with a high of -24ºC on Monday, then -23ºC on Tuesday and -20ºC on Wednesday.

The normal high for this time of year is -8ºC; the normal low is -17ºC.

The coldest it's ever been on this date was in 1976, when it dropped to -32.8ºC. The warmest ever was in 1990, when it was 3.1ºC.
