'Aim higher,' urges acclaimed Tory leader Pallister

Brian Pallister introduced himself today as the new leader of the Manitoba Progressive Conservatives, saying the party faces "a very significant rebuilding job."

"I want to build a political party that reaches out, that includes Manitobans. I want us to have the most inclusive political party in the history of this province," Pallister told reporters in a scrum at Manitoba Legislative Building.

Dressed in a dark blue suit, Pallister opted to forego a seat behind a large table in the Conservative caucus room for the more informal and intimate arrangement of having reporters and photographers gather around him.

He did not make any policy statements, vowing to start discussing the direction he wants to take the party and the province in the coming days and weeks.

Pallister, 58, officially became the party’s leader today — the effective resignation date of his predecessor, Hugh McFadyen.

Pallister won the Tory leadership by acclamation, as no other candidate declared their intentions to run by the deadline on Saturday.

A former Member of Parliament and provincial cabinet minister under Gary Filmon, Pallister repeated his campaign slogan that Manitoba — and Manitobans — ought to ‘aim higher.’

"Manitoba is described by too many people as a have-not province. It is not a have-not province. Manitoba is a have province with a have-not government," he said.

I agree with Brian Pallister. We are a have province with a have-not government. The NDP promised not to raise taxes but with a budget of 187 billion, the NDP with have to raise taxes. They have raised HYDRO and MPI rates. WHAT ELSE WILL THEY RAISE!!!!!

Down with the NDP!!! They are liars!!! We need less gov't and more jobs!
