Vaporize gummy bears. Make sand dance. Turn music into flame. They may not sound like traditional winter activities, but they're just a few of the interactive demonstrations that await visitors to Brandon University's Winterlude this Saturday.

The annual day-long open house features events, music, food and entertainment — and it's all free.

"Everyone is invited," says BU president Deborah Poff. "Winterlude is a great opportunity to explore the campus and experience the compelling advantages which make BU the ‘university of choice’ for students from western Manitoba and beyond."

Winterlude kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with a free hot breakfast in the university's main dining hall. Demonstrations involving professors and students from the faculties of science, arts, health studies, music and visual arts begin at 12:30 p.m. throughout the campus. Other highlights include a students vs. staff/faculty hockey game, Bobcats basketball games, public skating, hot chocolate and a bannock bakeoff open to all.

"We have been a part of this community for more than 100 years," Poff says, "and during Winterlude, we throw open the doors  to say ‘thanks’ with food and entertainment."
