Another semi rollover kills hogs

Highway 244 is closed near Manitou as police deal with a semi rollover that has killed a number of hogs.

RCMP say they were called to the single-vehicle crash site at about noon today. The driver of the semi, a 42-year-old man from the RM of Pembina, suffered superficial injuries in the rollover.

He was about three miles north of Manitou, headed north on the highway, when he lost control of the semi. It rolled over and landed in the east ditch.

A number of hogs were injured or killed in the crash. The surviving hogs have been corralled and trandsported off-site.

Inspectors from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency were called to the scene to assist with the animals.

Police say their investigation continues, but that alcohol has been ruled out as a factor.

It's at least the second semi rollover that has resulted in the death of a number of hogs.

Earlier today, police said that a semi driver involved a rollover earlier this month had been ticketed. A 21-year-old Brandon man faces a $199.80 fine for imprudent driving from that rollover, which took place May 8 near Kemnay.

The increasing frequency of these accidents reflects how broken our livestock transportation industry is. Drivers are responsible for the safety of hundreds to thousands of animals per trailer (poultry trailers hold over 7,000 chickens), yet require no government-mandated training. Drivers routinely keep multiple versions of the same log book (rather than the government-affixed tacometers used in Europe) allowing them to exceed maximum drive time before taking a break to sleep, and inadequate trailers that offer the animals little to no protection are used.

The best way to help Canada's farm animals is to stop purchasing meat, eggs and dairy from the factory farms that supply this system.
