Apartment vacancy rate up -- but just barely

WINNIPEG — Manitoba’s apartment vacancy rate has improved slightly, but is still the lowest in the country, according to a new report from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.

The federal agency said the province’s overall vacancy rate inched upward to 1.2 per cent in April from 0.7 per cent a year earlier and 1.0 per cent in October of last year.

The overall vacancy rate in the Winnipeg Census Metropolitan Area followed a similar pattern, edging up to 1.2 per cent from 0.7 per cent a year earlier and 1.1 per cent last October.

CMHC attributed the slight improvement in the Manitoba and Winnipeg rates to a combination of more renters opting for home ownership and a net loss of 4,356 Manitobans to other provinces, some of whom would have been renters.

It said Portage la Prairie had the lowest overall vacancy rate among the four other urban centres surveyed, at 0.5 per cent. That was followed by Brandon at 0.7 per cent, Thompson at 1.1 per cent and Steinbach at 4.6 per cent.
