A security officer was apparently narrowly missed by a bullet during an armed robbery early this morning at the Canupawakpa gaming centre.

A witness told the sun that a warning shot was fired at the guard when three armed men entered the centre to rob it a little after 1 a.m. this morning.

One woman tried to flee, the witness said, but tripped and was held at gunpoint on the ground while one of the bandits told her to "get the fuck back in" the gaming centre.

Former chief Frank Brown said his nephew was playing VLTs at the centre when the robbery happened.

"Three guys burst into the gaming (centre) with guns and they fired one shot," Brown said that his nephew told him. "They went into where the office is, the case where they keep the money and all that. But as soon as they fired a shot, he said they took off. The three guys were all wearing black hooded sweaters and masks."

Two of the men had guns, a witness said, including one .22 rifle and double-barrelled shotgun. A third man was armed with a knife.

Brown said the single shot sent the security guard scrambling.

"One of the security just about got hit, I guess. That I don't know. He took off."

The shot apparently hit the floor.

The robbers then made off in a vehicle with an estimated $7,000 to $10,000 in stolen cash.

The Canupawakpa gaming centre, near Pipestone, has 20 VLTs and brings in about $1 million annually to the reserve.
