Police and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are investigating the recent death of a child who was reportedly fatally injured in a fall at a city home-based daycare.

Brandon police confirm that they’re investigating, but declined to confirm details because the matter isn’t considered criminal at this time.

"We are investigating, but beyond that I can’t really comment," Brandon Police Service Const. Ron Burgess said on Friday. "We’re checking into the cause of death."

However, a number of sources have stepped forward to provide a general account of what happened. Together, those sources indicate that on Nov. 8, an 18-month-old child suffered head injuries when he or she fell down stairs in a west end, private home-based daycare.

Ambulances were called to the house and police also responded. The child was said to have been life-flighted to hospital in Winnipeg, although it’s unclear when the child died.

At least one adult was present in the home at the time of the fall. According to one source, the daycare was unlicensed, and its address didn’t appear during an online search of licensed daycares in west Brandon.

While investigating the death, police found a small amount of marijuana at the home, one source added. Court documents confirm that a man who lives at the home has been charged with simple possession of marijuana under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Burgess said no charges have been laid in relation to the child’s death as police continue to investigate and the matter isn’t considered criminal at this point.

"In this instance, we’re not going to make any comments unless we find out that the matter is a criminal case," Burgess said. "Our involvement here is just to make sure that the matter is not a criminal case, and if it becomes a criminal case, then we will put out more information.

"Out of respect to the family, the families involved in this type of event, we really don’t want to comment until we reach that point."

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner would only confirm at this time that it’s investigating the death of a child that occurred in Brandon on Nov. 8. Manitoba Family Services also wouldn’t supply any information about the case.

The daycare doesn’t appear to be running at this time.
