Big boost in pay for Brandon cops

City also offers retirement incentive

Brandon's boys and girls in blue will see more green on their next paycheques.

The city says it has finalized a contract with police officers that will give them a 4.4 per cent raise, retroactive to Jan. 1 — with the possibility of another raise this July 1.

The July "wage adjustment" will be based on what the city calls "comparator centres" — municipalitiies that are similar to Brandon.

Non-sworn members covered by the contract will receive a two per cent wage increase. The contract expires in a year.

The settlement also contains general language clarification, clean-up of wording and introduces a short-term, retirement incentive package. This incentive provides an enhanced retirement pay-out for individuals who have attained their "Rule of 80" (their age plus their years of service) with the city of Brandon and wish to retire prior to July 16th, 2013.

The collective agreement was ratified by the Brandon Police Association membership on Feb. 4, and received final approval from Brandon City Council last night.

The Brandon Police Association currently represents 86 sworn members and 39 non-sworn members within the city of Brandon.

Wow! Two raises in one year! While I greatly admire the professionalism of our police force I can't believe the city would vote these two increases in! And there is no telling what the percentage could be in July? The city had recently released concerns about the enormous cost of protective services and then they vote to give the police two above cost of living increases in one year! What are they thinking?
