Big cocaine seizure near Virden

A road safety checkstop paid big dividends near Virden this month, when RCMP uncovered $20,000 worth of cocaine in a car they'd stopped.

The 2007 Pontiac G5 was headed west near the intersection of the Trans-Canada and Highway 256, when Mounties pulled it over on May 19, at about 5:30 p.m.

The stop was part of Road Safety Week, which is designed to target high-risk driving behaviours like speeding or drinking.

But in this case, police found that the car's driver, a Saskatchewan man, was inviolation of existing court conditions, and he was arrested.

That's when police discovered more than 250 grams of cocaine in the vehicle, which they estimate it would be worth about $20,000 on the street.

Christian Iyamuremye, 22, of Estevan, Sask., has been charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and was scheduled to appear in Brandon court today.

Police say no further information is available and they continue to investigate.
