Boes and Bochinski highlight Wheat Kings scrimmage

Veteran Brandon Wheat Kings netminder Corbin Boes was sharp and rookie prospect Jordan Bochinski scored the game-winning goal to highlight Saturday night’s scrimmage in Brandon Wheat Kings training camp.

Boes, 19, showed why he finished third in save percentage (.916) in the WHL last season by stopping 15 of the 16 shots he faced after coming in halfway through the scrimmage as Team White posted a 5-3 victory at Westman Place.

Veteran forward Tyrel Seaman, 18, and rookies John Quenneville, 16, Dallas Starodub, 16, and Geordie Maguire, 17, also scored for Team White, while veteran Jason Swyripa, 19, and rookies Jack Palmer, 17, and Liam Gregor, 16, replied for Team Black in the final scrimmage before Sunday’s intrasquad game.

Quenneville, who has had a strong camp, also scored in the morning scrimmage for Team Black in an 8-6 loss to Team White.

Tristen Elder, 15, scored twice, including the game-winner for Team White in the morning scrimmage, while new Czech import Richard Nejezchleb, 18, put on a show by scoring two goals and setting up two others for the winners. Fellow import Alessio Bertaggia, 19, also scored in the morning for Team Black.

MAKING MOVES: Sixty-one players began main camp on Friday morning, with the training camp roster cut to 46 following Saturday’s first scrimmage. That number was trimmed to 45 when 15-year-old centre Braylon Shmyr — Brandon’s first-round pick in the 2012 WHL bantam draft — left camp immediately following Saturday night’s scrimmage. Shmyr, who isn’t eligible to play full-time in the WHL until 2013-14, had to report to his Midget AAA team in Calgary by Sunday afternoon. Brandon now has four goaltenders, 13 defencemen and 28 forwards remaining in camp.

ICINGS: D Tanner Browne, 15, suffered a shoulder injury when he fought F Jesse Gabrielle, 15, in the first scrap of training camp on Saturday morning. Also nursing injuries are F Dakota Boutin, 15, who suffered a thumb injury in Saturday night’s scrimmage, while a pair of veterans, F Jens Meilleur, 19, and F Dominick Favreau, 20, have yet to take part in camp due to back problems ... Two of the Wheat Kings’ top 16-year-old prospects went one-on-one Saturday morning when G Jordan Papirny stopped C Jayce Hawryluk of Roblin on a penalty shot.
FINALE: The Wheat Kings close out their 2012 training camp with the annual intrasquad game on Sunday at Westman Place at 2 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for children.
