Brandon Pride preps for bigger and better celebration
A three-day Pride celebration in Brandon will offer something for everyone, organizers say.
Brandon Pride 2012 has partnered with Brandon's Sexuality Education Resource Centre and Knox United Church to present this year's event, which will take place June 15–17.
This year's theme is looking backward, moving forward, according to organizers.
"Our theme this year encompasses two important points" said Kenneth Jackson, chair of the Brandon Pride committee. "One is looking back at what Brandon Pride has accomplished in a very short time. The other is looking towards Brandon Pride’s future as we invite people of all ages to become involved to promote a tolerant and diverse community here in Brandon."
The weekend kicks off with a lunch and learn session on the impact of gay-straight alliances in schools. The resource centre's Tara Lambert will present on the subject at Central United Church.
Following that, the gay-straight alliance from Neelin High School is hosting an all-ages retro-themed bowling night at Thunderbird Bowl from 7–9 p.m., the first time that Brandon Pride has had an all-ages event.
Saturday, June 16 will see a pride rally at Princess Park from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., including a free barbeque, guest speakers from Winnipeg’s Rainbow Resource Centre, booths set up from various organizations in support of Brandon Pride and musical entertainment provided by Brandon’s own Misty Street.
Although there isn’t a Pride parade in Brandon, organizers of Brandon Pride are putting together a group to march in the Traveller’s Day parade for the Brandon Summer Fair on Saturday, June 9.
That evening, in true Manitoba tradition, the organizers of Brandon Pride are hosting a Grad Re-do social at the Valleyview Community Centre.
Brandon Pride weekend closes with a pride worship service at Knox United Church at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 17.
Tickets for the social and the bowling night are available at the SERC office (161 Eighth Street) and Smitten Adult Boutique (658–18th St.).
