Brandon Transit gets 'smarter'

Starting Dec.10, Brandon's residents and visitors will be offered a new way to ride Brandon Transit with the implementation of automated fare boxes with smart card technology.

Starting Dec. 10, Brandon’s residents and visitors will be offered a new way to ride Brandon Transit with the implementation of automated fare boxes.

This new system will allow passengers greater flexibility when purchasing their passes by eliminating the current monthly pass and replacing it with a 30-day pass that can be activated at any time, the city said Friday in a release.

Using smart card technology, passengers will be able to purchase these new passes at all of the current locations in Brandon.

These Smart Cards will replace all monthly passes as well as the existing ticket books. All cards may be registered to insure against loss, damage and theft through a simple process.

Those who pay cash on board the bus will notice little change, with the exception that the new fare boxes no longer accept pennies.

"As the first transit system in Manitoba to adopt an Autofare system, Brandon Transit is once again working toward the future," transportation director Timothy Sanderson said in the release.

"Not only will this system provide current passengers with expanded fare payment options and security, it will also provide Brandon Transit with clear, concise data to better meet the needs of the community as it continues to grow."

Although the cost of all fares will remain the same with this new system, a one-time $3.00 cost will be charged for the initial purchase of the Smart Card. When this card is reloaded at the Transit Info Centre, it will not be subject to this additional cost.

Monthly passes purchased for December and tickets will continue to be honoured until Dec. 31. As of Jan. 1, 2013 only cash, Smart Cards and Post-Secondary ID will be accepted on board buses.
