After a shocking fall from the top 10 last year, Brandon has bounced about half-way back to land at No. 42 in the annual list of best Canadian cities to live in.

The list, compiled every year by MoneySense magazine, sandwiches Brandon between London, Ont., and Waterloo, Ont.

However, Brandon is singled out for special mention as the fifth-best place in the country for new immigrants. The city is given high marks for having a low unemployment rate, relatively cheap rent, and a large proportion of the population made up of immigrants.

In general, according to MoneySense's Mark Brown, the list this year shows that smaller cities are some of Canada's best places to live. On top of this year's list is the community of St. Albert, just outside of Edmonton.

Brown also notes that these is a "surge" in the west on this year's list, pointing out that nearly half of the top 20 cities on the list are west of Winnipeg.

Winnipeg itself does relatively well on the list; it ranks No. 19 this year, although that's down from No. 16 last year. Other Manitoba communities ranked include Steinbach (No. 85 this year, down from No. 61 last year) , Thompson (No. 121 this year, up from No. 164) and Portage la Prairie (No. 144 this year, up from No. 160).

On the list of just smaller cities, Brandon ranks 20th out of 140.

MoneySense collects 34 different statistics in order to tease out what they call an unbiased look at the 201 cities in the list.

After several years in the top 10, Brandon tumbled to No. 91 last year.
