Brandon man dead after Portage-area crash

A 21-year-old Brandon man is dead after the car he was driving crashed head-on into a semi truck earlier this morning.

Police say the crash happened in the RM of North Norfolk at about 7:30 a.m. this morning, about 4 km south of the Trans-Canada Highway.

Their initial investigation shows that a 1997 Nissan Maxima was southbound on Highway 242 when it was in a head-on collision with a northbound semi trailer.

Highway 242 at this location is a two lane, undivided highway, and road conditions were reported to be good at the time of the collision. But witnesses say the Maxima crossed the center dividing line and veered into the path of oncoming traffic.

The driver of the Maxima, a 21-year-old man from Brandon, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say his name will not be released.

The driver of the semi, a 37-year-old man from the RM of North Norfolk, was not injured.

There were no other persons or vehicles involved in the collision.

An RCMP Traffic Collision Analyst is attending to assist with the investigation.
