Break-in suspect found running from assault
Police in Dauphin who were on the lookout for a break-in suspect found her when they responded to a separate call regarding an assault.
The first complaint came in around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, when officers from the Dauphin municipal RCMP were called to a home on Main Street South in that city. They say that the home's resident had come home to find a woman inside who wasn't supposed to be there.
The suspect fled before police got there, but they say the victim of the break-in knew the suspect, and police say the suspect was under a court order to stay away from the home.
Just past midnight, however, police were also called to a fight in progress in a parking lot on Whitmore Avenue. When they arrived, they found that a 36-year-old woman had been assaulted — by the same person accused of breaking into the home, earlier.
Police say they spotted that suspect running from the scene of the assault, and arrested her without incident.
Carmen Sylvia Chartrand, 28, of Dauphin, has been charged with one count of break and enter, one count of assault causing bodily harm and four counts of breaching an undertaking. She was to appear in court in Dauphin today.
The victim of the assault was taken to hospital and treated for her injuries. The investigations are continuing.
