Broncos blank Wheat Kings
The Brandon Wheat Kings' only saving grace from their three-game set against the Swift Current Broncos is that it's over.
The Broncos rolled over the Wheat Kings 5-0 Saturday in Swift Current, Sask., to pick up their third win against Brandon in five days. It was the Wheat Kings' fifth loss in a row and ninth in their last 10 Western Hockey League contests.
The Wheat Kings were outscored 15-4 by the Broncos over the course of the week and have only tallied 11 goals in their past seven games. Captain Ryan Pulock and alternate captain Tyrel Seaman have been out of the lineup for the entire five-game skid, while another alternate captain, Jens Meilleur, has missed the last seven contests.
"For sure those guys are out, but it's not an excuse," said Wheat Kings head coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk, whose team fell to 10-16-2-1. "You put the equipment on every night, you go to battle every night. I think it's an opportunity. We can score one goal a game and win the game 1-0. We don't have to score a bunch of goals."
The Wheat Kings would have needed a bunch to beat the Broncos (12-13-3-2) on Saturday. Ryon Moser potted two goals and set up another for Swift Current, while Levi Bews, Reece Scarlett and Graham Black also found the net.
Broncos goalies Landon Bow and Eetu Laurikainen needed to combine for only 17 saves to share the shutout. Bow started, to give No.1 goalie Laurikainen a break, but left the game in the first period with an injury.
Curtis Honey made 26 saves for the Wheat Kings, who wrap up a two-game road trip Sunday night against the Medicine Hat Tigers (6:30, CKLQ) before returning to Brandon for a four-game homestand.
Tied 0-0 after the first period, the Broncos took control of the game with three goals in the second, starting with Moser's power-play marker 7:07 into the frame.
"We had a very good road period (in the first)," Gylywoychuk said. "We didn't give up lots. … In the second period our specialty teams let us down."
The Broncos went 2-for-3 on the power play, while the Wheat Kings were 0-for-5.
ONE-TIMERS: Moser and Black scored goals six seconds apart in the third period for Swift Current. Just one week earlier, Prince Albert also had goals six seconds apart against Brandon … The Broncos actually played four games during the five-day stretch, losing 7-2 to the Spokane Chiefs on Friday … In addition to Pulock (upper body), Seaman (upper body) and Meilleur (lower body), the Wheat Kings scratched C Tim McGauley (upper body), RW Jack Palmer (upper body) and D Rene Hunter (ill) … Brandon played one player short despite calling up C Quintin Lisoway of Neepawa from Steinbach of the MJHL … Swift Current scratches included LW Daniel Dale (suspension) and C Brent Benson (upper body).
