Builders in Manitoba shift back into drive

Manitoba builders shifted back into drive in January after hitting the brakes in the final month of 2012, new Statistics Canada figures show.

The agency said today that Manitoba municipalities issued $154.9 million worth of building permits during the month. That was a gain of 11.7 per cent from the previous month, and made up for some of the ground lost in December when permit values plummeted by 57 per cent.

However, despite the month-over-month improvement, January’s total was still down 11.4 per cent from a year earlier, when $174.9 million worth of permits were issued.

All of the December-to-January gain was on the non-residential side of the market, where permit values jumped by 64.4 per cent to $48.5 million from $29.5 million.

The value of residential permits issued was actually down a little, falling by 2.5 per cent to $106.4 million from $109.1 million in December.

Nationally, $5.8 billion worth of permits were issued in January, which was up 1.7 per cent from December, but down 4.3 per cent from a year earlier.

Statistics Canada said an increase in the residential sector more than offset a decline on the non-residential side of the Canadian market.
