Saputo Foods in Brandon announced last year that it would double the size of its Brandon operation, adding 60 new jobs in 2014.

A $2.5 million expansion at the Saputo Foods plant in Brandon's east end has helped juice city construction numbers through the first two months of the year.

February saw a total of $5.56 million worth of building permits issued for the city of Brandon, which is up substantially from the $3.8 million worth that was issued the same month a year ago.

All told, Brandon has issued $17.74 million worth of construction permits so far in 2014, which is up from $12.85 million worth in the first two months of 2013.

While commercial, industrial and institutional construction surges, though, residential construction is beginning to lag.

February saw 26 permits issued for residential construction in Brandon, worth $2.58 million, for just eight dwelling units. That's down from $2.8 million issued in February 2013, when builders took out 34 permits and were working on 14 dwelling units.
