Building permits spike in Brandon

Big projects in Brandon helped push annual permit numbers way up last year, according to statistics released today by the city.

In total, Brandon’s Planning and Building Department issued 1,005 permits in 2011, for construction projects worth $160.2 million.

That dollar value is up some 78 per cent from the year before, when the department issued 949 permits for $90 million in construction.

High-value projects like the new YMCA buildling and Brandon University's new Healthy Living Centre contributed to the increase, but the city helped itself a little bit, too: A new police station and Phase 3 of the wastewater treatment plant also boosted the numbers.

"That positions us well for future growth," said Ted Snure, the city's General Manager of Development Services. And it's typical, he said, "of the types of expansion that often follows the type of residential growth Brandon has seen in the past five years .... With the steady growth we are seeing in the residential construction sector, that cycle of construction is on track to continue."

Although commerical and industrial building projects accounted for nearly two-thirds of the total construction, residential permits were up as well.

A total of 341 dwelling units were built in 2011, compared with the 266 units the year before. Residential permits were up by about $3 million to a total value of $53.4 million in 2011.
