Local Canadian Pacific rail workers picket in front of the CP offices on Pacific Ave. on Wednesday morning. CP workers went on strike early Wednesday morning after last-minute negotiations before the midnight deadline failed. The union and CP are continuing talks today.

About 110 local Canadian Pacific rail workers are on the picket line today.

The strike began at 12:01 a.m., and includes some 4,500 engineers, conductors and rail traffic controllers across the country.

"It’s for a decent cause, we believe it is anyway," said Robert Hay, picket captain. Hay has worked for CP Rail for 32 years.

Hay said he hopes the union and CP Rail come to an "amicable solution."
"The sooner, the better. Nobody likes to strike," he said.

Canadian Pacific has suspended rail freight service across the country but commuter trains in several large cities that use CP track continue to operate.

The union wants improvements to pensions, benefits and work hours. Talks are scheduled to resume today.
