Camping fees to go up this year at provincial parks

Recent capital improvements to Manitoba parks include the boardwalk expansion at Grand Beach.

Seasonal camping fees in Manitoba’s provincial parks will increase this year, depending on the park and campsite.

Fee increases will range from $33.60 to $186.90.

The province said today the most popular campsites that offer showers, washrooms, firewood and a season that extends to Thanksgiving will pay the highest fees.

The province said despite the increase, Manitoba's camping and reservation fees remain one the most affordable in the country.

The 2013 Seasonal Camping Package and Application Form is now online. The deadline is Feb. 8.

The Parks Reservation Service opens the first Monday in March for cabins, yurts and group use reservations and the first Monday in April for campsite reservations.

The province said the fees go towards upgrading park campsites.

New and recent capital improvements to Manitoba parks include:

the recently opened new campground at Winnipeg Beach;
several new campground expansions including one at Birds Hill Provincial Park and a boardwalk expansion at Grand Beach;
new snow-trail grooming equipment in the South Whiteshell, Birds Hill and Grand Beach areas;
water and waste-water facilities in several parks;
new washroom and shower facilities in a number of parks; and
improvements to trails in several parks.

A number of provincial parks hit by the 2011 flood are still being repaired. Projects include:

the cleanup of the beach, pedestrian bridge, visitor centre and pine fort areas, and temporary repairs to ensure road access to the beach at Spruce Woods Provincial Park, expected to be completed by July 1;
restoration of the beach at Oak Lake Provincial Park;
temporary beach and day-use area repairs at Blue Lakes Campground at Duck Mountain Provincial Park;
repairs to the beach and day-use areas at Rivers Provincial Park, and repairs to eight campsites;
general cleanup and repairs to the beach and day-use areas at Manipogo and Rainbow Beach provincial parks; and
campground repairs at Lundar Beach Provincial Park.

Manitobans booked campground reservations in record numbers last year with a total of 64,268 campsites booked.
