Carberry man guilty of illegal fertilizer imports

A Carberry man has been fined, after customs officers found that he had illegally imported and sold more than 130,000 kg of fertilizer.

Ronald Becker, of Ronald G. Becker Sales Ltd., pleaded guilty to illegally importing or selling fertilizers that require registration in Canada under the Fertilizers Act and has been fined $7,500.

Customs investigators were tipped off more than four and a half years ago, in February 2008, by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. A subsequent search warrant revealed that about 130,703 kg of fertilizer had been imported without registration.

Under the Fertilizer Act, it's up to the importer to ensure that fertilizers are properly registered before they are imported or sold in Canada.
