City council heads into a long day of debate

 Brandon city council began budget deliberations this morning with more than 20 amendments to the document to be debated.

The proposed changes to the $75.3-million budget include:

 

- Increase infrastructure spending ($500,000) (proposed by Coun. Montague)

- Cut $163,000 relating to firefighter overtime (Berry/Blight)

- Reduce affordable housing specialist funding ($49,000) (LoRegio)

- Eliminate community development coordinator position ($70,000) (LoRegio)

- Reduce consulting fees by $25,000 in the planning and building department (Berry)

- Eliminate IT web developer position ($55,000) (Berry)

- Reduce Brandon Police Service general spending ($100,000) (Fawcett)

- Cut reserve appropriations $400,000 (Berry)

- Eliminate engineering position $55,858 (Montague)

- Eliminate heritage reserve allocation ($20,000) (Berry)

- Remove golf cart funding ($200,000) (LoRegio)

- Reduce general museum funding (roughly $90,000) (Fawcett)

- Reduce HR professional fees (fire) ($40,000 (Berry)

- Reduce transit $8,000 holiday service (Berry)

- Forgive Riverbank loan ($200,000) (Fawcett)

- Add $100,000 for centennial auditorium work (Isleifson)

- Reduce office equipment reserve $250,000 (Montague)

- Reduce conference expenses $50,000 (Berry)

- Establish a Keystone Centre reserve ($1,000,000) (Rice)

- Reduce salaries and staffing ($250,000) (Montague)

- Reduce grant to Renaissance Brandon by $100,000 (Montague)

- Reduce arts in the community by $20,000 (Montague)

- Reduce Christmas lights expense ($60,000) (Berry)

- Reduce luncheon budget $15,000 (Montague)

- Support for Safe and Warm program ($10,000) (Chaboyer)

Good to see the some of the councillors are finally looking after the taxpayers of this city!! Cut, cut, cut!! We shall see at the end how many of these ideas are implemented.
