City to taxpayers: Bill’s in the mail

Property taxes are due at the end of June in Brandon, and the city is reminding citizens that their bills are now in the mail.

Inside the bill is also an enclosed leaflet that gives some details on this year's tax rate.

Taxes are due by 5 p.m. on Monday, June 30 and property owners are responsible for ensuring that they're paid by then — whether they've received a bill or not.

Anyone who owns any property in the city of Brandon and doesn't receive a tax bill by May 30 should contact the city's property tax department at 204-729-2228 or 204-729-2592.

Tax payments can be mailed, but taxpayers should allow a minimum of three business days to meet the deadline. Those paying by Internet or telephone banking should take note of how many days their financial institution says it will take. The city must receive the funds by the end of business day on June 30th.

A discount of 0.5 per cent is allowed on all 2014 property tax payments received on or before May 30. Penalties on unpaid taxes will begin starting on July 1 at a rate of 1.25 per cent per month.

Payers can also leave a post-dated cheque along with a tax stub at the City Hall treasury department and the payment will be processed at month end. Receipts are not generally mailed out, as a cancelled cheque can serve as a receipt. However, those who require a receipt can indicate "receipt required" on the payment stub.

Annual taxes can also be paid monthly by automatic bank withdrawal on an installment plan. The application deadline this year's program is June 13.
