Less than a year after it was first launched, the city of Brandon has expanded its "Corporate Scorecard" so that it now tracks more than three dozen civic goals.
City manager Scott Hildebrand says with the initiative’s expansion, the public will be able to follow the progress of dozens of municipal statistics, ranging from building permit turn-around time, website hits or calls for fire service, to more cumulative goals like annual movements at the Brandon Municipal Airport or annual tree pruning and removal.
"Our Corporate Scorecard is providing us with important and meaningful statistics for the various ways in which we serve the public," Hildebrand said. "With this tool, we can track month-to-month, and now, year-over-year, how departments are performing their various functions. It’s extremely important to me that we have the ability to both monitor and measure our success as a service provider in order for us to uncover opportunities for improvement."
Hildebrand noted that many departments have begun to track additional goals since the scorecard’s public launch in May 2013, while a handful of departments have brought in new goals to better reflect the core services they provide.
The corporate scorecard is available for public viewing on the city’s open government webpage, located at opengov.brandon.ca, which also features the city's open data catalogue, responses to councillor enquiries and the city's Roadmap for Growth quarterly tracker.
Currently, there are 38 goals presented for public viewing, with season-specific goals to be added to the site as the year progresses. Where applicable, the site also features 2013 data from departments in a graph format for comparison purposes.
In addition to the public website, the city is also using the scorecard system to track a number of important internal statistics in each department, as well as corporate-wide statistics like sick time, overtime, employee turnover and workplace safety trends.
"We were able to put a mechanism in place to monitor internal functions such as employee use of sick time and jobsite safety and injury prevention and, as a result, have seen improvements in both areas," Hildebrand said. "Those are successes that can be credited, in part, to the better tracking and monitoring system we now have in place with the corporate scorecard."
